The Greater Work Was Always Oneness

Jesus said something staggering in John 14:12. “He who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also. And greater works than these will he do, because I go to the Father.” Greater works. Greater than walking on water. Greater than raising Lazarus. Greater than healing every sick person who came near. What could be greater than that?

Here’s what’s easy to miss. After three and a half years with Jesus, His twelve disciples were still arguing at the last supper about who would be the greatest. Jesus could heal a blind man, but He could not make those twelve one. Not because He failed. Because they did not yet have the Holy Spirit. And without the Spirit, even Jesus could not make people one.

That’s why He said in the very next breath, “I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper.” When the Spirit came, oneness would become possible. A body of believers actually joined to each other. Not a crowd. Not a congregation of strangers sitting in the same building. A body. The greater work is the church being made one by the Holy Spirit.

So here’s the truth worth carrying. The greatest thing you can be part of on this earth is not a healing meeting or a viral testimony. It’s being made one with other believers by the Spirit. Loving them. Carrying them. Functioning as a real member of a real body. That’s the greater work Jesus was talking about. And the gates of hell will never prevail against a church like that.
