Only Jesus Can Make You a Fisher of Men

Here’s something a lot of Christians have never sat with. Jesus didn’t say, “Study Me and I will make you a fisher of men.” He didn’t say, “Train at My seminary and I will make you a fisher of men.” He said, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” The making happens on the path of following Him. Not in a classroom. Not at a missions conference altar call.

You cannot become a fisher of men by raising your hand at a youth retreat. You cannot become one by graduating Bible college. You cannot become one by getting commissioned by the most respected church in the country. The early disciples didn’t even have a Bible. They followed Jesus, and He made them what He said He would make them.

Think of the picture in Jeremiah 18. The Lord sends the prophet to a potter’s house, and there he watches a man take ordinary mud and shape it into a beautiful vessel. We’re the mud. Jesus is the Potter. He’s the One who knows what to make of us, and He’s the only One whose hands can do that shaping.

God may use a faithful pastor or a missionary’s challenge to point you toward Him. But the making belongs to Jesus alone. So if you’ve been waiting for the right title, the right credential, the right invitation, you’ve been waiting for the wrong thing. The path forward is the path it has always been: follow Him, and let Him do what only He can do.
